Game of Chains WRAP UP!

Meme by Stakecito, that won the Best Meme Award! 🏆

Dear Cosmonauts!

Game of Chains has officially concluded. The incentivised public testnet successfully ran for almost exactly 1 month — from November 7th to December 8th 2022. Engagement from validators was excellent and we’re proud to say the initiative was a resounding success!

Read on for the highlights from Game of Chains.

HIGHLIGHTS 💫

  • 98 validator teams completed 25 tasks during the event and competed for 4 testnet prizes over 3 phases of Game of Chains! A full list of tasks can be found here
  • The leaderboard of participating validators can be found here including our TOP GAME OF CHAINS WINNER — CryptoCrew!
  • The Game of Chains coordinators at Hypha successfully launched a provider chain and 5 consumer chains. These included 3 dummy chains: Sputnik, Apollo, and Gopher; and 2 chains that we expect to see launching on Cosmos Hub: Hero (the Generic Asset Issuance Chain) and Neutron
  • Validators and consumer chain teams also also took part in launching 6 consumer chains in Phase 3 including Duality (which we also expect to see launching on the Cosmos Hub!), Strange (by StrangeLove), Flash (by CryptoCrew), Crescent (by B-Harvest), S-16 (by S-16 Research Ventures), and Schwifty NFT zone (by SG-1)

One of the key bugs that have been discovered during this testnet was on December 8th, when the provider chain unexpectedly halted at height 484893, soon after the slasher chain was initialized. The root cause is still being assessed by various auditing partners. More information can be found here.

In addition to that, we upgraded the provider chain twice to fix bugs and add additional features. This included updating the chain at:

  • At provider height 480681, we upgraded to add key assignment and slash throttling features
  • At provider height 53093, we upgraded to fix a bug in an iterator in the interchain security iterator

ATOM REWARDS ⚛️

The judging committee has been in touch with validators that are eligible for ATOM rewards thanks to their participation in Game of Chains! Thanks to Proposal 77 passing on the Cosmos Hub, we had 20K ATOMs from the Community Pool to distribute to eligible Cosmos Hub validators!

From the proposal of approved ATOMs:

How did we calculate rewards?

First, we identified which participant validators were also Hub validators at some point during the Game of Chains testnet. For the milestone rewards we divided 10K ATOMs among the validators set proportionally to their score relative to the total points allocated to Hub validators for completing the various tasks.

We made a similar calculator for the testnet awards. We allocated 10K ATOMs proportionally to total points allocated. For example, total points allocated for the testnet awards was 995 points. CryptoCrew was awarded 300 points. Thus: 300/995=30. ~30% of 10K ATOMs is 3015 ATOMs which is the amount awarded to CryptoCrew for the testnet awards.

TESTNET AWARDS 🏆

Best Auditors: CryptoCrew Validators

The CryptoCrew team did a fantastic analysis and visualization of task 9 and VSC packet counting for relayers.

Public Goods Awards: Genesis Lab/Stakeflow and Ping Pub

Genesis Lab/Stakeflow worked on this front end to view the governance process for admitting new consumer chains.

Ping Pub supported new Interchain Security proposal types in their explorer from the beginning here

Most Helpful Validator: StrangeLove and Chainapsis

Both validators were extremely helpful to the other participants in the Discord channel and helped them through Game of Chains! Dan B even made a video tutorial!

Best Memes: Stakecito

We loved StakeCito’s meme on an unexpected visitor joining Game of Chains!
