Cosmos HackAtom Berlin Recap
by All in Bits (Tendermint Inc)

For the past several years, members of the Cosmos ecosystem including validators, software engineers, and core developers have worked tirelessly to launch the Cosmos Network. Building the network was an exercise in decentralized development, with people from all over the world coming together on GitHub, Riot and the Cosmos Forum to contribute. Chjango Unchained noted in a recent Twitter thread, #cosmosisworldwide:
Many Cosmos contributors and team members have never had the opportunity to meet or work together in person until now.

Highlights & Results

HackAtom Berlin was the first Cosmos hackathon to be held in a physical space, and winning participants had the opportunity to take home a portion of the 7,700 ATOM prize pool. Competing teams submitted projects that fell under five categories including: sovereign blockchains and modules, improving the Cosmos developer experience, enhancing the user experience of blockchain specific application and cross-chain communication implementations using an early version of the Inter-blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol that is currently under development. The teams had 48 hours to hack and prepare to present their projects to the team of judges comprised of Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, co-founders of Tendermint and Cosmos, and Jack Zampolin and Chris Goes, core developers and contributors to Cosmos. In the spirit of international teamwork, the entire Cosmos SDK team came into town to help hackathon participants and share ongoing development updates with the community.

- It was an international melting pot, with developers from the United States, Russia, South Korea, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Italy, Switzerland, Romania and (of course) Germany coming together under one roof to work on projects that help the Cosmos ecosystem flourish.
- A mix of first-time Cosmos SDK users built some pretty impressive projects in addition to teams comprised of organizations that actively build on and contribute to the Cosmos SDK.
- At the end, we had a total of 21 teams participating for the first Cosmos HackAtom Berlin. In total, we had seven finalists and seven notable mentions.

Community-driven development is especially crucial to building an open-source, cryptographic, consensus-driven blockchain framework that is available to everyone. Thank you to the many contributors and community members who drive this vision and are making it a reality. If you weren’t able to make it to Berlin, you have the opportunity to compete at the upcoming Cosmos HackAtom Seoul — July 19th-21st.
